I began my work in the DTES in 2007, as a student in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC, in the Global Resource Systems program. My journey was shaped through pathways of questioning of accessibility and cultural relevance within food system security. Over the past 18 years, I’ve continued to deepen my understanding by actively supporting Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Food Justice, while respectfully contributing to interconnected communities of care.

I think we’re moving in the right direction, especially in a city like Vancouver, but there’s always room to grow. In the food industry, I’d love to see more support and awareness around strengthening existing food donation networks, while also encouraging new initiatives—whether big or small—to step in and help. Feeling that collective support is incredibly motivating. When people believe in an idea and work together to bring it to life, the impact becomes even greater.

I am very fortunate to have grown up in a family who spend lots of time out on the land gardening, hunting, fishing, harvesting wild foods and medicines, exploring, and connecting. A love and respect for all my relations was instilled in me at a very young age, and over time, a desire to heal the land and its people’s relationship with it began to evolve.

The positive impact of LunchLAB on my students and school community, combined with my involvement in the Coalition for Healthy School Food — which now boasts over 500 organizational members and supporters — has deepened my commitment to advocating for school food programs.

One of my most memorable moments was delivering food to the Sisters’ Tent on Powell Street one Friday morning, with an SUV full of food from Safeway. As they were unloading the donation, one of the program managers turned to another woman who was helping to unload and said, “Look Mary, you’re going to be able to eat this weekend!” It really hit home how much of a difference we’re making.

I grew up in Richmond, BC, in a totally food-obsessed family. Richmond is known for its vibrant and diverse food culture, and my reverence for food — as well as my appreciation for the power dynamics surrounding it— are very much shaped by the privilege I had to be exposed to so many cuisines from a young age.
